Sadly I never had the fortune of knowing Gareth, but I have been following his tragic story in the news and social media since he went missing, and like many I have been so saddened by what happened. It became apparent quite early on that he was a man that was loved and respected by so many people, and had numerous friends and acquaintances that thought the world of him. Clearly he was one of those very special people that leave a lasting impression on so many others, whether they knew him personally or not. I hope that his broken-hearted family will take comfort in the outpouring of tributes that have been made in his memory. And the sad and moving story that led to his peril, in which he was prepared to make such a selfless and courageous decision to risk his own life to save his beloved dog, is indeed one single, final act of love and decency that demonstrates what an extraordinary human being he was. It is these final desperate acts of love and altruism that become the greatest legacies that we leave behind, that touch and inspire everyone we leave behind, and remind us that there is a generosity and kindness in some souls in this world that make us all want to be better people. Gareth was one of those rare diamonds, who has left the world a better place for all that loved him, knew him, or simply just came to know 'of' him during this past week.
