Marianne 19th January 2021

I just wanted to share a brief exchange I had with Gareth when I connected with him on LinkedIn very soon after meeting him virtually for the first time at a conference I attended in December. I realised he had lectured at UEA when I was there and his book that Gemma mentions was one which CIPD (where I worked) used in their leadership development. What a lovely man - I am so so sorry. Marianne x 9th December 2020 Dear Gareth, I very much enjoyed hearing your story at Yetunde's conference on Friday. I also used to go to UEA (in SOC Faculty), I studied PPE from 1988 to 1991 - my Professor was Martin Hollis. How lovely that you have stayed connected with Yetunde. Best wishes, Marianne Gareth Jones sent the following message at 6:14 PM marianne how lovely to connect i was privileged to teach philosophy and social theory with martin one of the cleverest and kindest human beings i have ever known i was a young sociologist and he helped me so much i am still friends with some of his students and we tell stories of how he gently exposed the ludicrous nature of your argument i still recommend his books to those wishing to think philosophically where are you based ? be good to talk properly when all this is over---i am pleased the story was of interest gareth DEC 9, 2020 Marianne Wyles FCG sent the following message at 3:44 PM Hello, yes I was new to philosophy but Martin explained the concepts so clearly, getting us to question whether emeralds were green, and far deeper points! His secretary helped me with a small reunion I organised a few years after leaving. I'm in Kingston upon Thames now - and yes lets talk when possible, I may even dig out my sociology A level books in prep ! Best wishes Marianne
