Dear Shirley, Rhian, Gemma and Robbie It is hard to pull together a tribute to Gareth. There is so much to say, because there were so any dimensions to that wonderful, larger-than-life man. A few words seem inadequate to the task of capturing his personality, wisdom, kindness and sheer love of life. I feel so much for your loss. You were everything to him and I will never forget his glowing pride in all of you. Gareth was a close friend and a true friend, in the real meaning of those words. Someone who always genuinely cared about you, even though you were just one of dozens of his friends. Always fantastic company, raucous, funny and immensely witty. But also always ready to offer help, to offer some sage advice. Whether on a deeply personal issue or some nagging business decision. Gareth gave you the smartest advice and delivered it with an arm around your shoulder. And then, like as not, he would call out of the blue a few days later and say: “I’ve been thinking a lot about this...” and give you a whole lot more. One dimension of Gareth: in the past couple of weeks I have had calls from three senior execs, all heading multi-billion dollar corporations, who wanted to talk about Gareth. They had initially brought him in as a guru on leadership and organisational structure. They each ended up regarding him as the most brilliant adviser they had worked with and as a friend. Each said he had helped transform their business. Each was profoundly upset by the news of his death. The other dimension: well we all know the other side. Gareth had friends in pubs across London, Sussex and Wales. And he knew the life story of all of them – because he cared. Gareth was the bloke you always wanted to meet after the Spurs game for a pint. When you met Gareth it became a good day, even if it was after Spurs had gone down 2-0 on a wet Wednesday. But he would light up most when he started to talk about his family. He adored you so much and was proud of each of you. The family was his bedrock and everything revolved around it. I always knew what Shirley, Rhian, Gemma and Robbie were doing, because he always wanted to talk about you. Sheer pride and such deep love. I see Gareth now – huge smile, pint in hand, a welcoming joke and that silly giggle. My goodness, we are all going to miss him. Mark
