Gareth had the most infectious giggle. You just had to join in. He was one of the most gregarious, most sociable people I’ve ever met. I didn’t see so much of him, Shirl and the kids when we moved to Scotland, sadly, but whenever we did see each other, it was always so easy - like we’d seen each other the week before. He wore his intellect lightly, never patronising or talking down to anyone in any way. And he loved his pubs. Wherever he and the family lived, Gar immediately established a beloved local. To this day Alan and I can only pronounce the town Godalming as Godal-MING. Gareth’s way. I don’t even recall why we ever talked about Godal-MING, but its name will be etched on my memory forever, as will the memory of Gareth, a very special, much-loved man and truly one of life’s good guys. RIP, Gar xxx
