The Watchmaker’s Arms

It’s been incredibly difficult finding words to express how much Gareth meant to us all.  On the day we opened in 2015, he approached the bar with a huge grin and said ‘Hi, my name’s Gareth and I’m going to be your most regular regular!’ - and boy, was he. We soon got to realise what an incredible person he was, a man who was fiercely proud of his Welsh roots, of his academic and personal success but even more proud of his family, who he adored. When Bodhi and then Lenny came along, they were the cherry on his cake. Everyone knew Gareth and he knew everyone, and if he didn’t it wasn’t long before he was chatting away with them like a long lost friend. He was interesting and interested. He would often pop in after a business trip, where he had been working with academics and business leaders, and ask for a pint of ‘fourth one down’ then proceed to talk about football with the electrician, discuss restaurants with the lecturer, or politics with the bus driver. Gareth always made time to help anyone who needed it and gave advice freely and willingly. It was a standing joke that he would say goodbye to us at the bar, and forty minutes later he was only slightly closer to the door, having stopped to chat to every table on the way out - ‘If Shirl rings, I’m on my way!’
He was one in a million.  He will be missed terribly by everyone. He was loved. X
