Fireworks, Philosophy and Football

Created by Paul 3 years ago

After 45 years of friendship, I have so many wonderful memories of Gareth. From fiercely fought squash matches, to hundreds of football games, numerous gigs, picnics, walks on the South Downs, curries, parties (including Gareth's pyrotechnic display on Millennium Eve, which is still spoken of in awed tones in Muswell Hill - three rockets, two roman candles, a catherine wheel and a packet of sparklers), and, of course, pubs.

Gareth used to explain that he was selflessly 'giving something back to society' as a self-appointed voluntary 'Pub Visitor', offering advice and support to all who needed it! He possessed a remarkable ability to find a great pub in an unfamiliar city before a football match, and an equally remarkable ability to reach the bar in seconds in a pub packed to the rafters ('I saw a gap in the defence and made a late run!').

However, of all the memories, there are two scenes which have been in my mind in the sad days since Gareth's loss. The first is the 'post match analysis' in the Antwerp Arms in Tottenham. The conversation would start with, for example, a debate about the defensive ability of Davinson Sanchez, a then progress through a range of topics which might include The Future Of The Labour Party, What Jazz Can Teach Us About Leadership, Spinoza And Materialism, The Joys Of Grandparenting, and perhaps ending with Gareth's Mysterious Love For Eighties Spurs Midfielder Vinnie Samways. He would often point out that that the post match chat had been more entertaining than the game!

The second is Gareth, a great host, in dressing gown and slippers, happily cooking breakfast for everyone after a night of blues and rock n' roll at the Neptune pub, while guests and Gareth's lovely family drink coffee, read the papers, watch football previews and discuss the upcoming match later at the Amex Stadium.

Happy days, and memories that will stay with me always.

A wonderful man, husband, father and grandfather. What a privilege to have called him my friend.

With love to Shirley, Rhian, Gemma and Robbie.

All things must pass...
