Anke 1st February 2021

Dear Shirley, Rhian, Gemma and Robbie, I am also struggeling to find the right words to tell you what we feel and our thoughts about Gareth when really we would rather do this in person. But we are at home in Northern Germany which seems much further away than normally in these difficult times with COVID-lockdowns. That is the reason why Max and I postponed our last years visit to England. So now we know: we missed out a chance seeing you all which is sad because had we come, we could have had the always good experience visiting you in England over the last 35 years, after my year at Norwich UEA in 1984: Yes, Gareth was a special person, he made you feel special yourself. So our thoughts wander back to our talks about life and politics, to the English football matches, to our walks along the Southern Downs, having a drink or two! in the pub, to cooking some food, his telling us about the best pubs in some remote places. It was always good being together and never strange, despite the time gaps. Yes, Gareth was special, also special because of you all as a family, and we miss him. Love from Anke and Max
