I knew Gareth primarily through his work, although we were near neighbours and were on fond greeting terms whenever our paths crossed (in pubs or on beaches, usually).  In our field, his giant work with Rob Goffee is the only book I've unhesitatingly recommended to learners of leadership.  "Why should anyone be led by you?" is the most beautifully crafted and powerful provocation I have come across in more than 30 years 'in the trade'.  It will endure as will his memory.
