A Revolution in Management Theory

Farnan, in his seminal paper ‘Management Colney Style’ (2021), admirably describes early evidence of the leadership exhibited by Jones and Neal dating back to the late 1970’s through to the mid-80s.
As an occasional, and not entirely successful, member of the Colney Athletic squad I was also in the fortunate position of witnessing first-hand what was then hailed as a revolution in football management.
It was clear even then to the casual observer on the touchline that Jones was demonstrating authenticity in his leadership and the ability to demonstrate ‘followership’ (Goffee & Jones, 2000); here was a leader I was more than willing to follow.
Jones, was also an inveterate dispenser of sage advice and as a squad newcomer I listened carefully. The words of guidance Gareth gave me before my first match will always remain with me.
